Interbank Mobile Payment Service (IMPS) - Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Interbank Mobile Payment Service (IMPS)?

Inter-bank Mobile Payment Service is a new facility added to Mobile Banking Service. It facilitates funds transfer to an account of the beneficiary with a participating bank, based on beneficiary’s Mobile Number & MMID or Account No & IFSC.

2. What is MMID?

  • MMID is a 7 digit number allotted by your Bank for receiving funds through IMPS. The bank will allot MMID when you register your mobile number and account number in which you wish to receive funds.
  • If you have more than one account, you will get a separate MMID for each account.
  • You have to share your mobile number and MMID with the remitter for receiving funds through IMPS.

3. I wish to send money under IMPS? What are the basic requirements?

  • You should be a registered user of Mobile Banking Service of the Bank.
  • If you are not a user, please register yourself for mobile banking service. Three simple steps are Get user id and default MPIN by sending SMS MBSREG to 9223440000 or 567676 Download mobile banking application on your mobile phone, change MPIN and complete registration process through ATM/INB/Branch.
  • If do not have a smartphone, register for Mobile Banking Service through NUUP or SMS Banking.

    Visit your Branch/ ATM/ INB for activating your mobile banking service Get beneficiary’s Mobile number and MMID.

    • Funds Transfer>IMPS-Mobile No & MMID>select ‘Debit Account’>enter Payee mobile number>enter Payee MMID> Amount> Remarks >Submit>Confirm
    • Funds Transfer>IMPS-Account No & IFSC>select ‘Debit Account’>select Payee Bank>enter Payee Account Number> Amount> Remarks >Submit>Confirm

  3. Send a message to 9223440000 using the following keywords:

  5. If you are registered for the NUUP service, after successful login choose the IMPS (option 7) and respond as follows:

    Fund Transfer using MMID and Mobile Number-

    • Dial *99# from your Mobile handset.
    • NUUP welcome screen will appear asking you to enter your 3 letters of bank's short name or first 4 letters of IFS code.
    • After entering valid Short name or IFS code, NUUP menu will appear with different options of available services enabled for your bank.
    • Enter 3 for Fund Transfer using MMID and Mobile Number and Submit.
    • A subsequent screens to enter Beneficiary Mobile number, MMID, Amount and Remarks (Optional) will appear.
    • Enter MPIN and last 4 digits of account no (Optional).
    • A confirmation screen will appear showing success response.

    Fund Transfer using IFSC and Account Number-

    • Dial *99# from your Mobile handset.
    • NUUP welcome screen will appear asking you to enter your 3 letters of bank's short name or first 4 letters of IFS code.
    • After entering valid Short name or IFS code, NUUP menu will appear with different options of available services enabled for your bank.
    • Enter 4 for Fund Transfer using IFSC and Account Number and Submit.
    • A subsequent screens to enter Beneficiary Account number, IFS code, Amount and Remarks (Optional) will appear.
    • Enter MPIN and last 4 digits of account no. (Optional).
    • A confirmation screen will appear showing success response.

4. How to receive money under IMPS?

  • Register yourself with your Bank for getting MMID. Send SMS “MMID <Bank Code> <11 digit Account number>” to 9223440000 to Generate MMID. Bank Codes can be SBI, SBBJ, SBH, SBM, SBP and SBT
  • Share your mobile number and MMID with the remitter.
  • Check the confirmation SMS for credit to your account from the remitter.

5. How do I get MMID? How do I register for Interbank Mobile Payment Service (IMPS)?

If you are registered for Mobile Banking Service, MMID will be allotted for the Primary account enabled for Mobile Banking Service. For obtaining MMID in for other accounts, please generate either through State Bank Freedom application “Requests > Generate MMID”

(OR) for SMS banking customers send SMS “MMID UserID” to 9223440000.

If you are not registered for Mobile Banking Service, You can also generate MMID for all your accounts by sending SMS “MMID <Bank Code> <11 digit Account number>” to 9223440000 to Generate MMID. Bank Codes can be SBI, SBBJ, SBH, SBM, SBP and SBT.

6. I do not have an ATM card. Is there any other way for getting MMID for my account?

Please generate either through State Bank Freedom application “Requests > Generate MMID” or customers registered for SMS banking please send SMS “MMID UserID” to 9223440000.

If you are not registered for Mobile Banking Service, You can also generate MMID for all your accounts by sending SMS “MMID <Bank Code> <11 digit Account number>” to 9223440000 to Generate MMID. Bank Codes can be SBI, SBBJ, SBH, SBM, SBP and SBT.

7. How do I remit to the account holders in other Banks? Can I send the remittance to account holders across all the banks in India?

Most of the Banks are members of IMPS (Immediate Payment Service). Please visit National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) website http://www.npci.org.in/bankmember.aspx to know about the names of the banks participating in the IMPS Service.

8. Do I need to register the details of beneficiary before sending money?

No, there is no need to register the details of the payee before transferring funds.

9. How do I transfer funds through Interbank Mobile Payment Service?

To transfer funds using this Service, please follow the steps as under:

If you are using the application based service

Login to the State Bank Freedom mobile banking application.

  • Funds Transfer>IMPS-Mobile No & MMID>select ‘Debit Account’>enter Payee mobile number>enter Payee MMID> Amount> Remarks >Submit>Confirm
  • (OR)
  • Funds Transfer>IMPS-Account No & IFSC>select ‘Debit Account’>select Payee Bank>enter Payee Account Number> Amount> Remarks >Submit>Confirm

If you are using the SMS banking

Send a message to 9223440000 using the following keywords:

10. How do I make merchant payments through Interbank Mobile Payment Service?

If you are using the application based service, Login to the State Bank Freedom mobile banking application.
Select mCommerce > IMPS Merchant Payments menu

  • Enter the merchant Mobile No
  • Enter the Merchant MMID
  • Enter amount transferred
  • Enter Payment Reference (optional)
  • Select Debit Account
  • Submit & Confirm

11. What is the maximum amount I can remit using this service?

This remittance is subject to the daily/ monthly limit prescribed for Mobile Banking Service. The max limit is Rs 50,000/ per day if you are using the application based service. If you are using NUUP/SMS Channel, the maximum limit is Rs 5000 Per day for SBI and SBH accounts and Rs 1000 Per day for other associate bank accounts.

12. Why do I need MMID number?

When someone sends you money through IMPS using your mobile number and MMID, your account is identified by the MMID and Mobile number combination.

13. I have 3 accounts and I want to receive funds in all accounts using my mobile number? What do I have to do?

You have to register each account to get the MMID. The mobile number can be the same for all your accounts.

14. If I have more than one account and I want to register all of them, do I need to give different mobile number for each account?

You can give the same mobile number for all the accounts. The Bank will allot different MMID for each account.

15. What are the charges?

The charge for remitting money through IMPS is

The service charge change is applicable up to the period of 31st Mar 2017.

16. I am using the Mobile Banking Service already. What is the extra benefit for me?

There are two definite benefits-

  • Funds can be remitted without registering the payee.
  • Transfer of funds is in real time even for accounts maintained with other banks, in other words, the service is available 24 x7.

17. What will happen if I enter a wrong MMID?

MMID has 7 digits. The first four digits identify the Bank and the last three digits identify the account. Your account is identified by the MMID and Mobile number combination.

  • If the first four digits of MMID are not valid, the transaction will be rejected.
  • If the first four digits are valid i.e represent a Bank but not the intended Bank, your account will be debited and then the entry will be reversed.
  • If the first four digits are right and the last three digits are wrong, your account will be debited and then the entry will be reversed.

18. What will happen if I forget my MMID?


You can retrieve the MMID for your account using any of the following methods. Please note that the message should be sent only from the number, registered for receiving MMID:

Please generate either through State Bank Freedom application “Requests > Retrieve MMID”

Customers registered for SMS banking send SMS “MMID UserID” to 9223440000.

If you are not registered for Mobile Banking Service, You can also generate MMID for all your accounts by sending SMS “MMID <Bank Code> <11 digit Account number>” to 9223440000 to Generate MMID. Bank Codes can be SBI, SBBJ, SBH, SBM, SBP and SBT.

19. How to cancel or de register MMID?

If you are registered for Mobile Banking Service, MMID can cancelled either through State Bank Freedom application “Requests > Cancel MMID”

(OR) for SMS banking customers send SMS “MMIDCANCEL UserID” to 9223440000 to Cancel MMID.

If you are not registered for Mobile Banking Service, You can Cancel MMID for all your accounts by sending SMS “MMIDCANCEL <Bank Code> <11 digit Account number>” to 9223440000 to Cancel MMID. Bank Codes can be SBI, SBBJ, SBH, SBM, SBP and SBT.

20. What is the procedure for changing the Mobile number registered for MMID?

For changing Mobile number, you have to Cancel/ deregister the MMID allotted earlier and register again for the MMID with new Mobile Number.

21. I am a registered user of Mobile Banking Service. I have received the MMID for the accounts registered for my Mobile Banking service, what will happen, if I change my mobile number for MBS, using the Change Mobile number option? Should I de register by sending a message for cancelling MMID and register again?

For changing Mobile number, you have to deregister the MMID allotted earlier and register again for the MMID with new Mobile Number.

22. What are the other uses of MMID?

MMID can be used while making payments for goods/services purchased online over internet.

When you purchase goods/services over these sites, you will find an option ‘PAY through IMPS. Use this option to make the payment for goods/ services purchased over internet. You will have to generate an OTP (through the option Generate OTP) before you proceed for making the payment.

After the online purchase of goods/services is completed:

From the payment options Select “Payment through IMPS”
